ion provides the functional specification of artifacts, while implementation supports their actual construction (Blackwell, 2006). This interplay between abstraction and implementation is not unique to computing design. A structural engineer, for instance, conceives of a bridge design as an abstraction. That abstraction, earlier expressed on a drawing board and nowadays on a computer screen, then gets implemented with steel, masonry, and other building materials. In the pre-modern times, the leeway the structural engineer had with regard to the building materials was limited. Today, in the world of human-made composite materials, a structural engineer can conceive of an abstract bridge design, which may not be implementable with currently available building materials, with the hope that technological advances would bring them
